The METRO Red Line subway system helps you get where you want to go quickly and inexpensively. It takes less than 15 minutes to get to Hollywood from downtown Los Angeles, and the system continues on to Universal Studios and the San Fernando Valley, too.

Other subway lines connect to other parts of the region. They also connect with the areas's extensive bus and rail services.

Feel the vibe of the city from an open-air double-decker bus. Starline's Hop-On, Hop-Off tour takes you to the top destinations in the region.

Four different routes concentrate on Hollywood, downtown Los Angeles and the Santa Monica and Westwood regions.

  Takes 2 hours and includes stops at Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Sunset Strip, Pink's Hot Dogs, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the Hollywood RockWalk and Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills.

• Downtown or Purple Loop

  Visits Olvera Steet, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Grammy Museum, Little Tokyo, Chinatown and Grand Central Market.

• Santa Monica or Yellow Loop

  Takes 2 hours and visits the Santa Monica Pier and Aquarium, Westwood Village, Rodeo Drive and Century City.

• Universal or Blue Loop

  Visits the Hollywood Bowl and Universal Studios

Metro operates the region's public transportation system (including the subway) and has 1,500 buses that circulate through the area.

Getting around by bus is as easy as consulting the Metro Trip Planner online (www.metro.net), which will create a customized itinerary in seconds, telling you what line to take, where to catch it, where to exit and what it costs.

The good news about renting a car here is that Southern California has some of the lowest rental rates in the nation.

The bad news is that gridlocked traffic is commonplace during morning and evening rush hours.

If you do rent a car, travel at off hours and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.

Flyaway

If you're heading to or from the airport, the least expensive option is the LAX FlyAway shuttle, a non-stop bus service that picks up and deposits passengers at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles (Hollywood is a 12-minute subway ride away).

FlyAway buses also connect Van Nuys, Westwood and Irvine to LAX. One-way tickets from Union Station are $7. Info: 866-435-9529.

Shared-ride vans, rental cars and taxis are also available.

 

Taxi

If you opt to take a taxi from LAX to downtown Los Angeles, the flat rate is $46.50. Nine taxi companies operate more than 2,300 cabs in Los Angeles.

Cab rates are $2.85 for the first 1/9th mile and $2.70 per mile.

Before boarding any cab, look for the official City of Los Angeles Taxicab Seal, which indicates that drivers are trained, insured and their cabs are regularly inspected. Cabs without the seal are bandit taxis without legal authorization to operate in the city. All passengers ride for the price of one.
